The BigBrain dataset

The BigBrain is a microscopic resolution 3D model of a complete human brain, based on a 3D reconstruction from 7404 digitized histological brain sections (Amunts, Evans et al., Science 2013). It provides a highly detailed anatomical reference space at 20 micrometer (isotropic) spatial resolution. We provide maps of different structures, including neo- and allocortical cytoarchitectonic areas and subcortical nuclei (Amunts et al.) as well as maps of  cortical layers and brain surfaces (Wagstyl et al.). Human Brain Project

The BigBrain dataset is the result of a collaborative effort between the teams of Dr. Katrin Amunts and Dr. Karl Zilles (Forschungszentrum Jülich) and Dr. Alan Evans (Montreal Neurological Institute). For more information please visit the BigBrain Project website [https://bigbrainproject.org]

Our goal is to create an open-source, web-based, federated, high-resolution reference brain atlas and mapping tool as a neuroinformatics platform and neuroscience resource for research, training, education and outreach. We hope to build a pluridisciplinary community around this platform, with users and contributors from multiple and diverse fields of study exchanging information (methods, data, results) and sharing experiences online (real-time online collaboration). This open science platform will facilitate exchange and dissemination of research that make use of the BigBrain dataset alone or in combination with biological samples (omics data), high resolution postmortem (sMRI, photon microscopy, polarised light imaging), and in vivo imaging data (functional and metabolic from MRI, MRS, PET, EEG/MEG, etc). The platform is developed in close interaction with the European "Human Brain Project", and tightly integrated with their web services.

BigBrain Release 2015

  • Download 3D Volumes: Full volumes in histological space and resampled in the MNI-ICBM152 and MNI-ADNI spaces. The volumes are available in MINC and NIfTI formats, and at different resolutions (100 µm to 1 mm isotropic).
  • Download 3D Surfaces: Grey and white matter surfaces in histological space and resampled to the MNI152. Available in OBJ and GIfTI formats.
  • Download 3D Classified Volumes: Full volumes with voxels classified as grey / white matter, and CSF. Available in MINC and NIfTI.
